I think Hank Williams was without a doubt the best songwriter in Country music and one of the best songwriters in American popular music, period. But...he didn't write this song...the original was by Emmett Miller. He was famous for mainly performing in blackface shows which of course by today's standards would be considered very racist...

Well actually among real rock music fans (and i mean rock music like in indie rock, americana and generally openminded people with taste rock, lol) he is known and quite reverenced as the down to earth, close to his audience kind of major influence in modern rock music he was, right there with Johnny Cash.
