Of course it will work if you cut paper so it is square. Just be sure to cut all of them to the same sized square.

um if you dont have square paper what other paper can you use??can you use printer paper and measure it and cut it out like square paper?will it still work?

12 are sufficient, using less will probably be hard. Using more is, of course, ok.
