the romans' secret weapon was, of course, MICE. the unsung heros of the punic war. as everyone knows, elephants are terrified to death of the little rodents...which explains why the elephants ran back to the carthagian lines. they were looking for mouse traps...NOW you know the rest of the story.

Why can't the Roman soldiers burn hay and put them in from of them for protection? Another way is to place spikes in the way of the charging elephants. Thats will stop some of them.

Unknown to most and blatantly ignored in history books is the fact that Carthaginians, before realizing the advantages of elephants, trained and tested in battle cows, goats and mules. Covered in heavy armor, and totally wasted after inhaling hash fumes, they proved effective more as a distraction and a "rotfl" to the enemy rather than a fear inducing wild beast. An ashamed and really pissed-off Hannibal didn't quit and went on testing giraffes, hippopotamus and finally drunken elephants
