I love this movement, it completely expresses rachmaninoff. He wrote this after overcoming a long period of depression and writers block, in this movement, its as if its all being washed away and he's being born again while unconcious and floating in the ocean his inner being is being reshaped, all his emotions are turbulent inside of him. Its so fantastic, and theres nothing wrong with this speed to me.

I believe you are right; he was very precise about how he wanted the recordings to be. That's why in the first place he signed with Edison (because they were technically the best at that moment), but then left them for Victor, once he got dissatisfied with the way Edison intervened in the recording process, limiting his artistic freedom.

Rachmaninoff will not let any musical genius go to waste. He knows EXACTLY what he is doing when he plays 'fast'. It's his work, and he has every right to convey whatever he feels inside, and it is not just his fingers, but also his heart and soul which commands the piano.

Remember folks, he's only speeding up (e.g. btw 3-4 mins) to fit that portion of his music on a 78 rpm shellac disc (ca 3.5 mins- spot the edit). Lots of composers put up with this sort of shite; dinner during Mozart operas; Beethoven symphonies being split during concerts. People of genius have always needed rich ignoramuses' cash... Historical curiosity informs contemporary performance?

I would say, though that i prefer the way he plays it to others. very passionate but at the same time not over sentimental. Also a genius at work is every bit as beautiful as nature itself.

Well Rachmaninov himself would at times make it inescapeably clear that he prefered the way other people played his music

It does, however, mean it's fast TO YOU, which is all that really matters when you're listening to music anyway.

That's relative... I mean, you can prefer it to be slower, but that doesn't mean it's fast.
