of course when she comes back the next day it's perfect but watching this is just as brilliant in it's "off-ness" as the perfect take is in it's "on-ness". if that makes any sense..?

I never understood why people were so crazy about Stritch...until now.
Absolutely brilliant. The skill is so immense.

CHRIST!! how could he have asked for another take following that, that is f*****g inhuman.
Viva stritch, what an absolute star even when so vulnerable.

Who cares now if she was drunk or not? This is utterly and absolutely brilliant, you would have to be very out of touch with reality and human pain not to see that. You can see so much in this portrayal. A long history of disappointment, failure, seeing and feeling that everyone else's lives are so much different from yours, fake or not. This is like "Rose's Turn" without the showing off. Just look in Elaine's eyes. Put the song on mute and just read what's behind the eyes.

My late mother started out as an actress, and WAS a drunk. It's always fascinating to watch my mother's contemporaries going through the same processes. My mother would get tired and fall apart, as Elaine does, here, then bounce back the next morning, in whatever endeavor, and knock everybody's socks off. My mother gave Ernest Borgnine his first costume for his first role ever as an actor, but never became a famous actor herself. Yet he still remembers her! What a profession!

The whole point of this behind the scene - is she is drunk. She sucked. This was terrible. Regardless of how good you are of the incredible talent God gives you - you can't show up drunk and work for 14 hours. This scene was include din her documentary. She comes back the next day - sober, gentle, ready - - and nails this song to the wall. This scene - - tragic. A train wereck. You can't not watch. As she butchers the song - still sounding better than anyone else - but utterly fails.

"Maybe if I took my hat off I could do it".
*takes it off and starts rumpling hair*
I just cracked up at that part! Elaine, you are quite a character : ]

Let's face it, this is one of the most brilliant example of the creative process. Elaine is playing a drunk; I doubt that she was drunk herself when recording. I think she was tired. She's trying to find her sea legs-- and ultimately she does. There is only ONE Stritch and she is a treasure.

I don't know about her being drunk. She's probably tired and frustrated. I know she was a drinker, but I don;t see evidence of her being drunk here.

The fact that we have this video...of an artist performing compete art...we are truly blessed. Sondheim/Stritch...the collision is complex, the result is sublime.
