in context, brel's playing with a double entendre (or maybe the unfolding shifting meaning of a line depicting a tragic shifting consciousness of the character), going from the line (paraphrasing), "the others say these things / that she's too pretty for me / that i'm just average (or just so-so) / AT KILLING CATS (cutting cats' throats) / but i've never killed a cat!" and then he goes on to say or at least it's been a long time, etc, etc...

Thank you.. i knew the literal translation but it didn't have a clear meaning to me. I thought it perhaps alluded to some mistakes he had made with other females (les chat) earlier but i wasn't so sure. Thanks again.

Sorry, my english is not perfect. Brel's playing a character - depict a frozen society. The sentence litteral means "The people, they say I'm only good to cut the throat of cats". For me, it means that this man surely have done it, when he was a young child. Anyway now he is adult, and error because of suffering in childhood, people are still here to remind you, because what is the most important in the world in this Brels's song : The happynness is forbidden in this kind of society. IMHO.
