2001 yes, after 10 years in hangar. It was built to carry Buran only! Also note, that it had 6 engines, mainly because Russians are behind in that area. But it's a nice aircraft, so after 10 years it was upgraded and is flying. Look up this website: Dark Roasted Blend: Rare Photos of the Russian "Buran" Space Program

the an225's been flying in cargo service since 2001 though, if it didn't work you'd think they'd have noticed by now

The primary purpose of this bird is to refuel fast the Soviet tank armies that rush through and flood the Western Europe so they may not have to wait until the pipe-laying batallions supply them with diesel fuel and can continue to advance at maximum speed. So this heli was one of the main components of red threat.

That's right. If it worked. It would be a great machine. I don't buy "It just did'nt meet specifications." Russians just didn't have the knowhow to synchronize separate powerplants. An other example of Russian greatness, the AN 225. Nice large version of a copy of C-5. But why did they build just one and never finished the other? I know. I spoke to one of the captains that flew one. He told me, that it's a piece of crap. It almost crashed. I was inside of it, when it landed.

Oh please stop....it can be used for everything starting from Medivac, to civilian transport and ending with law enforcement and humanitary aid.

It's plenty a reason. The world's most expensive helicopter project was cancelled because it did'nt meet specifications. The Homer was a fine bird. Nothing was wrong with it, it being less fragile than some helicopters. It just did'nt meet specifications.

That's not a reason to spend money on a huge project and then cancel it. Chinook has two rotors. Russians failed to calculate data. In those times, they lacked computers and had no way to synchronize multiple engines. US had enough problems with V-22 Osprey, which has similar concept.
