I agree Callas is virtually unrivaled in this music and particularly this aria, except perhaps by Ponselle's wonderful 1925 recording. I would add to Gioconda and Medea that the quintessential Callas can be found also in her Tosca and Norma. Interestingly, she spoke negatively of the music in Gioconda (borderline screaming) and Tosca (hysterical). Her favorite roles were Norma and Traviata.

I LOVE this opera. I think I saw it for the first time at the Met w/Arryo or Eleanor Ross Not sure which. Opera is my only passion in life. I am 47 (ugh) and have NO friends so my opera keeps me going

THIS is my all time favorite aria sung by Callas, right up there with her Casta Diva, and Mamma La Morta! It moves me to tears. from the first note you KNOW she means SUICIDE!!! Callas is the alpha and omega, the truth and beauty expressed! BRAVA!
