In a nutshell: you can blow up a vector to however big you want it without losing any detail because the shapes are determined with equations (handy if you want to make something the size of a poster...or a billboard). With a raster ("real pic") image, you can only enlarge it to a certain point before you start getting nasty pixelation and resolution problems.
