My brother and his friend kept singing in their English class once, and the teacher got pissed. So he handed them the lyrics to this and said "You wanna sing? Sing this." They had to sing this in class or they lost a point off their grade.

that's a daft comparison - since when is an entertaining musical anything like a sporting event? i would say, particularly with gilbert and sullivan, ridiculous applause is not only indicated, but mandatory!
