The Legacy - Iraq
BackMar 2008 Walls everywhere, children filled with hatred, graveyards and more graveyards. Journalist Ghaith Abdul-Ahad offers an outstanding report from the streets of Baghdad. He asks how his home town is after 5 years of occupation? He finds a city devastated in every way. At an orphanage in Sadr City, the children express hatred for Americans. "We don't want them here. Many people are dead because of them," cries eight year old Hussein, whose father was killed by a car bomb. This young Iraqi generation have become anti-westernised by the war. On the edge of Sadr City sit Baghdad's killing fields. The scene of thousands of sectarian murders over the last three years. It's a desolate place: "Only the killers and the killed ever come here" says Abdul-Ahad. Here in the unmarked graves lie the victims of the Shia militia gangs. Meanwhile, Baghdad is now a city divided by miles of walls. They divide Sunni and Shia ghettos, "where one street is at war with the next". Anger and desperation appear at every turn.
