Indonesian Orangutans Face Extinction

Back

Anna Chan: An Indonesian orangutan activist group staged a protest in capital Jakarta's main street today. Their concern... the shrinking habitat for the Asian orangutan. Here's more from Jakarta. Four wildlife activists were dressed in orangutan costumes to show the plight of the primate. They believe the population has been so hard hit because they are running out of jungle habitat. Trees that make up the landscape are being chopped down and made into oil palm plantations. On Wednesday the group predicted that orangutans could be extinct within three years if development continues. [Hardi Baktiantoro, Center of Orangutan Protection]: "The experts said that orangutan could be extinct in 2015, but we have our own opinion that predicts the orangutan will be extinct within two or three years from now." Indonesia's jungles are a massive natural stores of carbon. But environmentalists say rampant cutting and burning of trees has made the country the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter. [Hardi Baktiantoro, Center of Orangutan Protection]: "According to COP field investigations, there is proof that Malaysian companies are destroying natural habitat, capturing and hunting orangutan in Indonesia. Maybe they are not doing it in Malaysia but yes, they are doing in Indonesia." Indonesia and Malaysia together produced 83 percent of the world's palm oil in 2007.
