(Arabic: سطيف; sātēf`, formerly Sitifis Colonia; population 230,000 (2005 estimate) is the capital of Sétif Province, with 1.45 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 6,504 km², in northeastern Algeria. The city of Setif is located to the south of the Babor Mountains in the Little Kabylie region which is located on the High Plateaus. Setif is connected by rail roads as well as the main national highway. It is a university city approximately 190 miles east of Algiers on the highway to Constantine. Sétif was established by French colonists on the ruins of the first century Roman colony Sitifis. Sitifis was founded by the Romans as a colony for veterans.As the town grew, around 297 A.D, the province of Mauretania Sitifensis is established, with Sitifis as the central city. From this point on until the 19th century when the French occupied the area, almost no historical information can be found on the city. In 1838, a French garrison, or military post is established here.In 1945, a local rebellion against the French, resulted in the massacre of forty thousand Algerians. It is now known as the Setif massacre.
